The times

Curtin house and its neighbours were built in the style of the Interwar Californian BungalowJCPML00382-33

The Curtin home was constructed by a local builder in 1923.

Its low-pitched roof, wide eaves, exposed roof timbers and prominent gables identify it as an example of the Interwar Californian Bungalow, a model which was popular for suburban homes across Australia between World War I and the onset of the Depression in 1929.  This style was faithfully followed for the Curtins’ 1930s lounge room extension and its gabled roof.

Other examples of the Californian Bungalow—including the houses on either side of the Curtin home—are placed within a wide range of styles that reflects a diversity of construction periods, tastes and resources among Cottesloe’s houses.
