The telephone

The hall 1998 JCPML00632/6 The wall fitting behind the door held a wall-mounted telephone before a handset was installed in the same corner. There was no chair beside the telephone in John Curtin’s time, as that would have encouraged longer calls by the children. The telephone was to be available for John Curtin at all times. [9]

... there was always that confounded telephone! It never stopped ringing.

John Curtin’s dinner was often put in the oven to keep warm as he took calls during meals. There was little privacy with the telephone in the hall.

Elsie Curtin and daughter Elsie hear on the telephone in the hall that John Curtin is Prime Minister of Australia in October 1941. Curtin telephoned often from Canberra, but wrote less frequently after he was Leader of the Opposition. Pix Magazine/ACP Archive, Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, JCPML00410/10

I can recall one [call] in particular from the Deputy Leader of the Opposition who apparently made a statement upsetting to Father.

Father pointed out the wrongs of the statement in no uncertain terms and I’m sure the Deputy Leader’s ears must have been burning across as far as Brisbane ... I can’t recall the exact words but it was quite exciting. We paused in our evening meal to listen.
